Join us this Saturday, December 20th at the City Auditorium from 10-12 the Library Planning Committee will be introducing the public to the vision for the new Caledonia Public Library. Come join us in supporting the next chapter in our library's story!

Public invited to info session Saturday on plans for new library. A new, freestanding library may be in Caledonia’s future, and for the first time the public will have the chance to view current plans and provide input on the project. An information session will be held Saturday, December 20, from 10 a.m. to noon in the city auditorium. The project was green-lighted by the city council at its December 8 meeting, bringing the project closer to reality. The impetus for the project was an offer of $1.625 million to build a new library on the vacant lot at the intersection of Main and Kingston. The total cost of construction is estimated at $3.5 million, leaving $1.875 million to be raised through donations and grants. Taxpayer funding will not be required beyond utilities and minor incidentals. The existing library is outgrowing its space in city hall as demands increase and the role of the library changes, especially in the area of technology. The proposed library will offer separate spaces for children, young adults and adults. In addition, it will have a community room that can be used by various organizations.

Physical attributes of the building include street-level, handicapped-accessible entrance, solar panels that will provide 191% of the building’s energy needs, an attractive brick and stone façade and generous windows to provide natural light. The interior will include a fireplace and comfortable seating, a children’s area for programs and story time, Zoom rooms and quiet study areas and seating with charging areas for personal devices as well as computer stations.

The library building design committee will be on hand Saturday to answer questions about the project and the public will have the opportunity to view interior and exterior plans and give feedback.
